A minor footnote to "The Wise Old Hack at the Writers' Table": Actually the person Vidal refers to was Lenny Spieglgass, an important long time Hollywood script writer and Broadway writer. He was a gay man, slightly swish but as long as he turned out the winning scripts and the public did not know him, the studios were fine with it. Everyone knew Lenny was gay but he was careful to not let his sister Beulah know even though she lived in the apartment next to his. He died in 1985.
